Resort: Relaxed and un-spoilt, Matrei nestles at an altitude of 1000m between the two highest mountains in Austria and in the centre of the Hohe Tauern South Nature Reserve. This is a small, friendly family resort which offers picturesque countryside along with a wide range of sports and leisure facilities. Matrei is located in the Tyrol province of Austria and is 2 hours from Innsbruck Airport, 2 hours 15 minutes from Salzburg Airport, or 2 hours 30 minutes from Munich Airport.
Winter: Grossglockner is Austria’s highest mountain and the Grossglockner ski resort encompasses the villages of Matrei and Kals and offers 110km of piste including 30km of easy, 64km intermediate and 16km difficult runs. There is also 36km of cross-country skiing, floodlit tobogganing, ice skating, curling, horse drawn sleighs and winter hiking. The skiing reaches an altitude of over 2600m and is East Tyrol’s largest skiing area.
Summer: There are plenty of summertime activities in Matrei including climbing, hiking, rafting, mountain biking, fishing, horse riding, trekking and glacier tours. Additionally, the national park offers an abundance of summertime activities, hiking and cycling. Stop off at any of the mountain huts for a refreshing drink and to soak up the stunning views.
