American? Then now is the time to buy ski property in Europe

09 Mar, 2017 by Investors In Property

Over the last few years, buying Swiss ski property has been almost impossible for American clients. Banks were refusing to deal with Americans, so unless you happened to have a residency permit, the door remained firmly locked to you. With the changing of the guard at the White House, that seems to have changed; an American couple who recently bought in the pretty Swiss resort of Wengen has become the first in a long time to receive finance from a Swiss bank.

There has never been a better time than now to invest in Swiss ski property if you’re from the US. The US Dollar is strong against the Swiss Franc, and you can buy more for your money than ever before. So, if you’re an American buyer, which resorts should you be looking at?

In our experience, US buyers tend towards the more unique resorts, where the character is distinctly different from what you can find at home. Resorts like Grimentz have exactly the right sort of Swiss Alpine charm, while Davos/Klosters was an original spa town and has seen some of the most famous figures of European history spending time there.

Most popular amongst Americans has always been Wengen, where the traffic free resort is only accessible via a small, quaint cog railway that ratchets its way across the Jungfrau Region. The main street is cute and littered with traditional Swiss buildings and a few striking turn of the century hotels.

It helps that Wengen and neighbouring Grindelwald are home to some of the most distinctive scenery in the Alps, with the infamous Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau peaks dominating the landscape. The larger ski area is home to the revolving restaurant that posed as Blofeld’s lair in James Bond, while the Jungfraujoch is famed for being the ‘top of Europe’.

Ski in, ski out properties like the two and three bedroom Chalet Brunner apartments make Wengen popular amongst those looking for slope side convenience. There are a few excellent options in the centre of town, overlooking the Lauterbrunnen valley and its distinctive waterfalls too, including Chalet des Alpes, which boasts a superb location close to the finish of the famous Lauberhorn race course.

Whether you’re looking at France, Switzerland or Austria, if you’re hoping to take advantage of the excellent Dollar rates get in touch with us and we’ll try and find the perfect ski property for you.
