Located in the Wildkogel ski area, in the heart of the Pinzgau Region, Neukirchen is close to the Salzach River in the Tauern National Park. The village itself dates back to the 10th century, and it boasts historic buildings in a stunning Alpine setting. The surrounding mountains, forests and lakes make a beautiful backdrop throughout the year, making this a superb dual season destination.
The village has a good selection of local bars, restaurants and shops, with the larger town of Mittersill only fifteen minutes away, and the linked resort of Bramberg within easy reach. Kitzbuhel is only a half hour drive away, and the skiing in both the immediate Wildkogel area and the Kitzbuhel Alps has something to suit every skier.
The village is only an hour and a half from Innsbruck Airport. It is an hour and 45 minutes from Salzburg and two hours 25 minutes from Munich. The village has a local train that runs a regular service to Salzburg too, making this one of the more convenient ski resorts in Austria.
The Wildkogel ski area is superb for beginner and intermediate skiers. The range of blue and red runs are perfect for improving skiers, and while experts might be tempted to go elsewhere the off piste in the area is excellent. The ski area is fabulously uncrowded, and with pretty wooded slopes, wide bowls and cosy mountain huts, casual skiers have everything they need in the 61km of skiing located on the doorstep.
For those wanting a little more of a challenge, the Kitzbuhel Alps can be accessed via the Panoramabahn, ten minutes from the resort. From there, skiers can enjoy the scenic mountain restaurants, extensive ski area and the famous Hahnenkamm 'Streif' downhill, where skiers can reach up to 88mph during the FIS World Cup race.
Along with the off piste, Neukirchen is a great location for ski touring, with routes setting off from Mittersill and day tours at Kitzbuhel. There are over 500km of cross country ski trails in the area too, making this a great resort for Nordic skiers.
Neukirchen is a superb summer destination in the Hohe Tauern National Park, boasting hiking trails through the Kitzbuhel Alps that wind through adventure parks and picnic spots. There are guided excursions with National Park Rangers that run from the village, and a mixture of lower trails through woodland and high Alpine walks.
The area also has over 800km of mountain biking trails, with routes for everyone from first time mountain bikers to expert runs for the experienced. The gondola runs during the summer months, making it easier to enjoy the thrills of downhill mountain biking without having to cycle back uphill. The Salzach river is nearby, and is home to watersports including rafting and canyoning for the adventurous.
The Bramberg-Neukirchen area will be home to some excellent local events, including open air concerts, mountain mass, the garden festival of St Lawrence, and the Museum Festival and craft market. There are also a number of markets that serve local food and produce during the summer months.
Whilst there are a few resale apartments available in Neukirchen, the newly built ski in, ski out chalets are a better investment option, with three to five bedroom properties in superb piste side locations offering better returns than smaller apartments some way from the slopes. There are a limited number of chalets available that offer full hotel and management services, which is a bonus for both rental purposes and personal use.
