"Schladming is a beautiful historic mining town and is well known for skiing and summer hiking and biking. This bustling town dates back to medieval times and has lots to offer with pretty cafés, après-ski bars and plenty of shopping. The resort also benefits from 122km of pistes on the doorstep and forms part of the expansive Ski Amadé region - home to over 860km of varied pistes and cosy ski huts to enjoy." - Maizie Baird
An historic mining town, Schladming is situated in the Styrian province of Austria. The pretty town is well known for skiing in winter and hiking and mountain biking in summer. The bustling medieval centre of the town is distinctive, and gives the resort a unique character, while the vibrant range of bars, restaurants and shops are always an attraction.
From excellent little cafes in which to stop for a quick lunch, to haute cuisine, this resort has some superb restaurants in the charming main square and up the mountain. The resort is part of the large Ski Amade region, with extensive skiing in a number of excellent resorts.
Schladming is superbly convenient for the airports, with Salzburg offering reasonably priced year round flights only an hour away from the resort. Klagenfurt is an hour and 50 minutes away, and Munich is two hours and 30 minutes away.
As a part of the Ski Amade region, Schladming has access to over 860km of skiing on one ski pass. The immediate ski area boasts 123km of pistes, with some superb red runs, good skiing for beginners and some challenging black slopes for experts. Although the reputation as a racing venue can be offputting, the resort is ideal for intermediate skiers.
Skiers who enjoy fast cruising can take advantage of the large number of red slopes, the downhill runs and a number of scenic blue routes. Expert skiers and snowboarders alike will enjoy the off piste tree runs, and there are a couple of good mogul runs for skiers. The area is well linked, with all four base areas linking up well on the mountain.
The area has some excellent mountain huts, notably Onkel Willy's Hutte, which has fast service, good food and a sunny terrace that you can enjoy a long lunch on. There are some good nordic ski routes, with 60km of trails available as well as 50km of winter hiking paths.
Schladming is a great hiking and biking destination during the summer months, with the longest downhill mountain bike track in Austria, while there is a family track that is suitable for children and a gondola that will take you directly to the top of the run. There is also mountain go karting for those that prefer their vehicles to have engines, and a range of nature trails including a 'fairytale path'.
There are plenty of activities for the kids in Schladming during the summer, with mini golf, pony rides and both indoor and outdoor pools available. There is a freestyle summer season on nearby Dachstein Glacier, with the Dachstein Super Park open to the end of July or the beginning of August when the snow cover is good enough.
The Dachstein-Tauern Golf Course is a ten minute drive from the centre of Schladming, with an 18-hole course and country club. The par 71 course was designed by Bernhard Langer, and offers a genuine challenge to golfers. The beautiful Alpine course was opened in 1987l, and has a pro shop, golf school and driving range.
