Samnaun Resort

The Town

Samnaun has a relaxed atmosphere compared to many other Swiss and neighbouring Austrian resorts. Nestled at the head of a remote and secluded valley, the town has a unique charm that leaves a lasting impression on those who visit. Although it is located just 90 minutes from Innsbruck, the village retains a peaceful feel, with quiet streets and uncrowded surroundings. Famous as Switzerland’s only duty-free resort, Samnaun attracts many day visitors who want to enjoy luxury shopping at tax-free prices. The village also showcases traditional Swiss character through its annual festivals, local traditions and family-run restaurants. For those who appreciate fine dining, Samnaun is home to exceptional Michelin-starred restaurants such as La Miranda Gourmet Stübli.

The Skiing

Samnaun is part of the Silvretta Arena ski area, which offers 239km of slopes shared with the popular Austrian resort of Ischgl. The famous Smuggler’s Run connects Austria and Switzerland over 61.8 km and features three different routes (bronze, silver, and a challenging gold run) ensuring that skiers of all levels can take part in the iconic run. Samnaun is renowned for its efficient lift system and has 46 lifts in total with new ones added regularly. It also holds the title of being the first resort in the world to install a double-decker cable car.

The ski season typically runs from November through to May, adding to the resort’s dual-season appeal. The slopes cater especially well to intermediate skiers as well as to those who love a challenging off-piste ski. Samnaun's south-facing location gifts around 83 sunny days per season, making the mountain views all the more spectacular.

Summer

Samnaun is just as lively in summer as it is in winter. With over 250km of hiking trails and 150km of biking routes, the mountains are filled with sports enthusiasts as well as families. One of the most rewarding hikes leads to the Sulnerferner residual glacier: a 15.8km trail that takes around seven hours to complete and offers breathtaking views. Other activities on offer include paragliding, golf, rafting, tennis, and zip-line rides. For those seeking relaxation, the Alpenquell Adventure Pool provides a full spa experience. Families can also enjoy the Valley Museum, a farmhouse dating back to 1658, or explore the many child-friendly trails such as the Fairy-Tale Trail and the Wooden Ball Track. And of course, duty-free shopping remains a year-round highlight.
