Four Ski Resorts with the James Bond seal of approval

30 Oct, 2015 by Investors In Property
In honour of the opening weekend of Spectre, and the return of everybody’s favourite British spy to our screens, we give you the lowdown on the top ski resorts with the James Bond seal of approval.

Grindelwald – Switzerland

The famous revolving restaurant that served as Blofeld’s lair, the ski chase, the witty quips; it was arguably Bond’s finest hour on the ski slopes, and it was all in this ski area. Grindelwald is less purpose built than many resorts in the area, with a traditional Alpine cog railway serving as one of the fastest ways up the mountain.

The ski area has slopes for everybody, from beginners to experts, with runs like the Lauberhorn world cup downhill slope providing enough fear factor for even a seasoned skier. The ski area includes Grindelwald, Interlaken, Wengen and Murren, with the Murren area being home to the revolving restaurant itself.

Chamonix - France

Ah Chamonix, home to more glaciers than you can shake a stick at, and a truly dazzling array of terrifying black runs for those with the skills and the nerve to take them on.  Chamonix is widely regarded as the ski Mecca and in 1995, when The World is Not Enough filmed there, the resort was far more ski bums than ski bunnies.

While the Bond film itself might’ve been distinctly average, Chamonix is a unique resort, for a start it’s a town. That means it’s never completely closed for business, and with its sterling reputation for lift accessed off piste, Chamonix is well worth a visit.

Cortina – Italy

Next on our whistle stop tour of Europe’s ski slopes is Cortina. While the name might sound like a famous Ford model, this is Italy’s most glamorous ski resort. Bond visited there in 1981’s For Your Eyes Only, but the average joe can still take in the summit of the Tofana.

Alternatively, you can hop off at the mid-station of the Freccia nel Cielo cable car and enjoy the best skiing in the resort, or stick around in the town for some classic Italian class as enjoyed by Audrey Hepburn and Sofia Lauren back in the resort’s heyday.

Solden – Austria

The newest addition to James Bond’s ongoing ski resort tour, Solden features in Spectre. The film opened on Monday, and has already been getting rave reviews. In terms of the resort, Solden boasts some excellent skiing, like most of the resorts in the area. Also like many resorts in Austria, Solden offers a wild apres ski scene in a number of bars, with the most hardcore apres skiers staying out until the early hours. You can see why Bond might approve.
