Snow Conditions improve across the Alps

We might be all for ski property here at IIP, but we do try to enjoy the slopes whenever we have the time. With the blizzards looking likely to continue into next week bringing much needed snow to the Alps, we took a look at the ski resorts with the best snow conditions right now.

Purpose built resorts like Avoriaz in the Portes du Soleil, Courchevel 1850 in the Trois Vallees and Tignes and Val d’Isere are well covered with snow right now, with over a metre falling in some resorts. Chamonix has had the highest snowfall in the French Alps in the last week, with around three metres falling on the higher slopes.

Over in Switzerland, Verbier and the Four Valleys have had around a metre of snow while Zermatt and Saas Fee both now have almost two metres of snow on the highest pistes. Wengen, in the Jungfrau region, will see an additional 30cm this week, with freezing temperatures that should encourage you to wrap up warm if you’re thinking of heading out there in the next few weeks.

As usual, the best snow conditions are up high, where you can enjoy powder on piste. Sticking with snow sure resorts like Verbier, Zermatt and Saas Fee is a good idea, while over in France resorts like Val d’Isere, Avoriaz and the Three Valleys offer a good depth of snow from the top of the hill to the bottom of the valley.

The huge amount of snowfall in the last week or so has made the off-piste fairly unstable, so any keen back country skiers will need to content themselves staying on the slopes for the next couple of weeks. If you’re going to look at resorts in the next few weeks, you’ll be lucky to find most resorts have a good base layer of snow in the village, despite some of the lowest resorts seeing some rain over the weekend.

Snowfall in areas like the Trois Vallees are seeing heavy enough snowfall in the next few weeks that anyone planning on making the trip should make sure they have snow tires and chains on hand.
