Value in skiing is a relative term, often applied to the resorts in Bulgaria or Andorra. It’s not, we suspect, the first thing you think about when it comes to Switzerland. Generally assumed to be the home to glitzy celebrity resorts, Swiss skiing is well known as the home of luxury in the Alps. When it comes to value ski resorts, you don’t always find them where you expect.
Contra to practically everyone’s expectations, when calculating cost per kilometre of piste across Europe, Swiss resorts come out on top. Four Swiss resorts make it into the ranks of top ten best value ski resorts per kilometre, which beats France and matches Italy. Three of the four resorts in question are a part of the Franco-Swiss ski area of Portes du Soleil though, which means skiing in a place like Verbier might not be any cheaper.

Sitting pretty at number seven on the list though, is Four Valleys resort Veysonnaz.
Its neighbour Nendaz makes the cut too.
As one of the smaller villages sharing a ski area with Verbier, Veysonnaz has access to one of the best ski areas in Europe, and even as a smaller resort it’s surprising to see it featured here. After all, it’s commonly accepted that to get the Verbier experience on a budget, heading to one of the smaller Four Valleys resorts is the way to go.
Elsewhere, the French resort of Saint Gervais is surprisingly good value, sharing a ski area and an aesthetic with Megeve, and coming in fourth on the list. As the site of the most recently opened Folie Douce, and sitting within an area well known for its great mountain restaurants.
The highest Austrian resort is Brixen im Thale in SkiWelt at twelfth on the list, while the most unexpected resorts to make the ‘good value’ cut are Megeve itself, Lech and St Anton. Take a look at the full Tesco Bank list to see where you get the most skiing for your money.
