After what has been, undeniably, a terrible December in terms of snowfall across much of the Alps the snow is finally arriving once again. It started snowing lightly at the end of last week in some resorts, with more storms headed for the Alps over the next few days. There has been over a metre of snow since last Tuesday in some resorts, while parts of the Alps are expecting well over half a metre to fall over the coming week.
The snow has been heaviest in Austria so far, but there have been storms across the Alps and with more snow forecast to fall this week, skiers heading for the Alps in the next few weeks can be assured that the skiing will be getting better and better. Resorts in areas like the Milky Way ski area are already boasting over two metres of snow in some areas, with most Italian ski resorts boasting better coverage than their French counterparts.
Thus far, this has been a year for snow sure resorts once again, with places with skiing over 2000m unsurprisingly keeping their snow far better than lower resorts have managed. In that vein, glacier resorts like Saas Fee, Zermatt, Tignes/Val d’Isere and Hintertux are great choices for those looking for a good chance of snow, while well-known powder resorts Chamonix and Grimentz remain popular and Davos/Klosters has been open since early October and has an impressive snow record.
Elsewhere, the more traditional style resorts, where summer trade is as important as skiing in winter, pretty towns and villages have an enduring appeal whether they are snow sure or not. Megeve and Gstaad both offer a timeless glamour while the extent of the Three Valleys ensures there’s always good skiing available at the top of Val Thorens and Courchevel 1850.
For those looking for snow sure ski property, Saas Fee is our favourite option this year, with the classic Swiss town and high altitude together making it one of the best places to find fresh snow early in the season.
